mtDNA Testing

Our clients often use this test to prove a relationship to the maternal line when the mother is not available for testing or to validate biological relationships through the maternal lineage. The results of a mtDNA test, in conjunction with other evidence (e.g. family records, family history, other living relatives), can be used to infer maternity.

Both men and women have mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that they receive from our mothers, but men do not pass it on to their children. Mothers pass copies of their own mtDNA to each of their sons or daughters, but only their daughters can in turn pass it to their children. That is why we can use mtDNA to track maternal lineage.

If you are interested in learning more about our mtDNA testing services, or if you would like to order an mtDNA test, please contact one of our knowledgeable client services representatives at 1-800-284-0573.
