Our Client StoriesYou may feel like you’re alone in your situation. You’re not. Many people have come to us seeking answers to basic questions: Is this man my father? Is this woman my mother? Is this person my brother/sister? DNA Roots is proud that we have been able to help answer these questions. Here are some of our clients’ stories: James (32) was adopted as an infant and has always had a close relationship with his adoptive parents. However, since he had been told he was adopted, he had a nagging curiosity about his biological parents. He was able to locate his biological mother after contacting the charity through which he had been adopted, but there was no record of his biological father. After making contact with his biological mother, she mentioned to James that she was certain his biological father was one of two men, and promised to look both of them up on his behalf. Unfortunately, one of the men was deceased, but the other, a man named Bill, was alive and still lived in the same town. What’s more, Bill was interested in learning whether James was his biological son. James heard of the DNA Roots website from a work colleague of his, who himself had had a paternity test done and had been impressed with the low cost of the test and conclusiveness of the test results. James, his biological mother, and Bill arranged to meet to gather the sample cheek cells needed for the test. James sent the kits back to DNA Roots and was informed of the results a week later: Bill was his father. James finally had the peace of mind he had sought for so long. Karen (43) never knew her biological father. Her mother passed away recently, and after the funeral Karen was told by one of her aunts that a man she always knew as "Uncle David" might actually be her father. He lived just outside of town, so she paid him a visit one weekend and asked him. He responded that it was a possibility, but given some confusion at the time, he could not be certain. Karen located DNA Roots while searching for information on the Internet, and just days later she had her results: "Uncle David” was indeed her biological father. Karen tells us she was amazed with how quickly she received her results: "I knew waiting would be the most difficult part, but DNA Roots ended up giving me the results even earlier than promised." Jenny (58) and Jillian (52) are sisters who share the same mother but were not sure that they share the same biological father. The father who helped raise them had passed away nearly ten years ago, and both Jenny and Jillian had been hearing rumors of their mother’s infidelity. Jenny figured a DNA Test was out of the question, but Jillian searched the Internet for answers and came across something called a "Siblingship Test" on the DNA Roots website, which seemed to fit their needs. A quick phone call to DNA Roots was all it took to set up the testing. The DNA Roots representative explained that a Siblingship Test could be performed to determine whether they were full or half-sisters. Jenny and Jillian were able to convince their mother to send in a sample along with both of theirs, and in two weeks’ time they had the answer they had sought: they were half-sisters. Of course, this did no harm to the close relationship they had as sisters, and had the desired effect of putting the question to rest. Earl (26) was adopted at birth, and he had been trying to locate his birth parents since he turned 18. He finally located his biological mother who told him the man she thought was his biological father had died five years earlier. She also told him that his father came from a large family and gave him an old telephone number she had. Earl was eventually able to track down an uncle, one of his father’s brothers. His father's family was surprised to hear from Earl and hesitant to accept him because Earl's father had never mentioned he may have fathered a child. His father was no longer alive to provide any assurance, so some of the family members were skeptical. In his years of searching, Earl had learned about DNA testing and knew there was a test that might give his new family and himself the peace of mind they needed before moving further. Earl and his uncle took a Y-STR test through DNA Roots, and found out that they were indeed related. Earl and his father’s family are now comfortable knowing that they are indeed all family and have been working to establish a lasting relationship. |
